The Joey Porter Jr. situation was discouraging long before the Pittsburgh Steelers actually traded him to the Dallas Cowboys, but the organization took time to explore all its options. Finally, the Black and Gold decided they had reached a point of no return and could not realistically keep the 26-year-old cornerback for another week.

“The Cowboys intensified talks about a Joey Porter Jr. trade on Wednesday, {and} at that point, the Steelers realized they had no future with Porter,” ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported. “He wasn't playing games, he was out with a back injury, contract-itis, whatever you want to call it. It was clear they were not going to get a contract done with him, and that he wanted to move on and be traded.”

A feeble Cowboys secondary helped pave the way for a deal, marking the third time since May of 2025 that the two teams have done business together. Fowler noted that Pittsburgh was seeking a first-round pick when the two sides began communication a few weeks earlier, but general manager Omar Khan settled for a 2028 second-round selection and 2027 sixth-rounder instead.

Fans generally want their teams to retain impactful homegrown talent, especially when said talent is the son of a franchise great, but the relationship soured beyond repair. The Cowboys get needed defensive reinforcements, perhaps even immediately so, and the Steelers can eliminate a potential distraction. A win-win?

Whether or not Pittsburgh could have handled the situation better is up for debate, but there was no other logical course of action to take once the contract extension saga essentially turned into a stand-off. The tension in Steel City should now dissipate.

Scrutiny will remain high, however. Fans will be watching closely to see how Porter performs in his new home.
