The San Antonio Spurs are currently wrapping up their preseason slate as they get ready for the upcoming 2026-27 NBA season. The Spurs are looking to bounce back from their tough NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks this past season, with Victor Wembanyama hoping to prove that his poor performance in that series was not a sign of things to come.

Recently, Wembanyama got 100 percent real on his mindset as the new season approaches.

“I got a lot of growth to do.. and now the standard isn’t being the best on the planet anymore, it’s being better than last year,” he said, per the Spurs on X, formerly Twitter.

Most would argue that Wembanyama still has considerable work to do to get to the “best in the planet” milestone to begin with, as last year's Finals meltdown proved that the Spurs star still has a ways to go in order to be the best version of himself in the biggest moments.

However, there's no doubting the former number one overall pick's status as the best defensive player in the NBA by a country mile, as well as one of its most terrifying forces around the basket. In fact, many pundits think the next step in Wemby's evolution is leaning even more heavily into his presence around the rim and continuing to cut down on the number of perimeter attempts he takes, which are often viewed as bailing the opponent out from having to defend against his immense physical gifts.

In any case, the Spurs are slated to kick off their new season at home on October 20 with a Western Conference Finals rematch against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
