The Oklahoma Sooners had high hopes of having a big year under head coach Brent Venables. However, as the Sooners look ahead on the schedule to their annual battle with Texas in two weeks, the season may be turning into a disaster. The Sooners have not been able to put together a consistent or cohesive offense this season, and it will be very difficult for Oklahoma to compete with the No. 1 team in the nation.

After starting the season with a 51-0 victory against overmatched Texas-El Paso, the Sooner have struggled badly. They were expected to give Michigan a battle in the second week of the season, but Oklahoma dropped a 17-10 decision to the Wolverines. A home game against New Mexico was supposed to give Brent Venables' offense a chance to get well, but all that unit could manage was a 14-6 triumph. Quarterback John Mateer has not been able to give the Sooners a consistent threat on offense.

The Sooners had not shown much in their first three games and then began the most difficult assignment of the season against undefeated and second-ranked Georgia. There was no reason to think that the Sooners would be able to compete on the road against the Bulldogs, and Georgia had control of the game by halftime.

Another rout is expected against the Longhorns, and sports commentator Skip Bayless believes that Venables' time at Oklahoma may be coming to its conclusion. “As much as I like Brent Venables personally and as a defensive mind, he's now on the hot seat with a Texas nightmare looming in Dallas in two weeks,” Bayless tweeted on X.
