Reports of a shakeup in offensive operations in Denver were on the nose.

Head coach Sean Payton gave up offensive playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Davis Webb this offseason, but the team’s unimpressive results in the first four weeks of the season led to word that he was planning to reverse course. Payton confirmed that was the case at a press conference on Thursday.

“We’ll make a change offensively. I’ll call the plays,” Payton said.

Payton said he still believes Webb will be a head coach in the future and noted that something similar happened to him when he was the Giants’ offensive coordinator under Jim Fassel earlier in his career. He also said Webb will remain involved in the making up game plans, but Payton will be the voice in quarterback Bo Nix’s ear on gamedays.

Payton explained that the decision was more challenging than the one to give them up, but it was made because of a belief that “there’s more there” offensively than the team has shown to this point in the season. The Broncos will get their first chance to show that is the case against the Chargers this Sunday.
