Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Sam Fuld has turned down the Athletics' offer to become the team's new president of baseball operations and has withdrawn from consideration, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Saturday.

Fuld will remain in Philadelphia, continuing in his role which he assumed in 2026 after earning an MBA from Wharton. He joined the Phillies organization in November 2017, shortly after ending his playing career. Fuld initially worked as a player information coordinator before receiving a promotion to general manager in December 2020. He held that position under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski until taking a leave of absence in 2024 to pursue his graduate degree. For the past two years, Preston Mattingly has held the general manager role.

Fuld's continued presence in Philadelphia also comes as the organization considers its long-term leadership structure. Dombrowski, who is 70, is expected to receive another contract extension when his current agreement expires after the 2027 season. Fuld and Mattingly have both been touted as potential successors, although Fuld's move into business operations could allow the two executives to oversee different areas of the organization.

The A's, meanwhile, must continue their search after Fuld's withdrawal. The team finished the 2026 season with a disappointing 64-98 record, with injuries and pitching problems contributing to a campaign that fell short of expectations. Only the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels finished with worse records than the Athletics.

The franchise dismissed general manager David Forst in August, with Dan Feinstein handling the position on an interim basis through the end of the season. The A's, who are scheduled to relocate from Sacramento to Las Vegas after the 2027 season, last made the playoffs in 2020.
