Chris Olave’s illness creates late-week uncertainty for fantasy managers, but his return to practice suggests he is trending toward playing against the New York Giants. If Olave is ultimately ruled out, Saints receiver Devaughn Vele would become the best immediate replacement, while Germie Bernard and Tre Tucker offer stronger alternatives for managers searching beyond New Orleans.

Saints injury report raises concerns

Olave did not practice Wednesday or Thursday before returning as a limited participant Friday. The Saints officially listed him as questionable, giving him a realistic chance to play but leaving fantasy managers without a definitive answer entering the weekend. If active, Olave should remain in starting lineups because of his featured role and favorable fantasy ceiling.

New Orleans also listed Alvin Kamara as questionable with a back injury after three limited practices. Kamara’s status matters for the entire offense because his absence could force the Saints to lean more heavily on their passing game. Quarterback Tyler Shough practiced fully all week despite a left-hand issue and carries no game designation.

Defensively, linebackers Kaden Elliss and Anfernee Jennings are out after missing every practice with calf and knee injuries, respectively. Defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd, defensive back Lorenzo Styles Jr. and long snapper Zach Wood join Olave and Kamara as questionable. Vernon Broughton, Tyree Wilson and Colby Wooden avoided final designations after improving during the week.

Fantasy managers should monitor Sunday morning reports because New Orleans visits the Giants in the early window. Olave’s limited Friday practice is encouraging, but illness can affect conditioning and snap volume even when a player is cleared. Managers relying on him should have Vele or another early-game receiver available as insurance.

Ranking the waiver replacements

Devaughn Vele is the priority pickup if Olave sits. Vele has caught 25 of 37 targets for 252 yards and two touchdowns through five games while averaging 12.4 PPR points. He also leads NFL receivers with 207 routes run, demonstrating that his playing time is already secure rather than dependent entirely on Olave’s status.

Vele would project as New Orleans’ top available wide receiver without Olave, increasing his chances of leading the team in targets. He already carries flex value with Olave available and would move into low-end WR2 territory if the Saints deactivate their No. 1 receiver. His Week 5 line of four catches for 26 yards was disappointing, but he has scored at least 11.4 PPR points in three of five games.

Germie Bernard ranks second because his role could last beyond Week 6. The Pittsburgh rookie caught six of nine targets for 80 yards last week and led the Steelers in targets. Injuries elsewhere in Pittsburgh’s receiving corps have created an every-down opportunity, making Bernard more than a one-week contingency play.

Bernard is a reasonable PPR flex against Tampa Bay, particularly for managers who miss out on Vele. His production remains less established, however, as he has 13 receptions for 140 yards without a touchdown this season.

Tre Tucker ranks third but offers the best big-play upside. Tucker has recorded 19 catches for 274 yards and one touchdown on 28 targets, averaging 10.4 PPR points through five games. His 14.4 yards per reception reflects his vertical ability, although a modest 5.6 targets per game creates a lower weekly floor.

The waiver order is Vele, Bernard then Tucker. Start Vele confidently if Olave is ruled out, consider Bernard a PPR flex and use Tucker when chasing ceiling. If Olave plays, Vele remains usable, but his projection settles closer to flex range.
