CINCINNATI -- The Reds made multiple roster moves on Friday that both had implications for both the remainder of the 2026 season and '27 as well.

Cincinnati claimed utility player off waivers from the Yankees. Reliever was placed on the 15-day injured list with loose bodies in his right elbow.

Pitcher was recalled from Triple-A Louisville and utility player (right wrist sprain) was moved to the 60-day IL.

The 27-year-old Cabrera, who was designated for assignment by New York on Wednesday, played only three big league games this season after he sustained a gruesome left ankle fracture sliding into home plate in May 2025. He played 122 games this year with Triple-A and batted .288 with a .790 OPS, 19 home runs and 69 RBIs.

“I think this is a guy we view that can possibly stay here and be on our club next year," manager Terry Francona said. "The reports on him have been like off the charts as far as makeup. He’s played seven positions. We need to see where that goes and what we want to do after we talk to him. It seems like we can’t pass this one up.”

Cabrera, who made $1.2 million this season, is under club control for two more seasons.

Over 304 Major League games for the Yankees, Cabrera batted .232 with a .635 OPS and 20 homers, and he plays every infield spot and the corner-outfield positions. Another roster move will be needed when he reports to Cincinnati.

Garcia, 31, became a feel-good story after emerging from independent ball in 2024 and '25 before making his Major League debut for the Reds on June 23. Since then, his 46 innings ranked him second behind only Trevor Richards of the White Sox (48 1/3) among all big league relievers.

In his last appearance, Garcia pitched one inning with one run allowed during Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Dodgers. Francona noted he had been pitching through the injury, which was confirmed by an MRI exam. Surgery will be scheduled this week.

“We just thought let’s set up his surgery, let him start his offseason, and then he can be healthier quicker because we pitched him a lot," Francona said. "And for him to go the last 10 days, I don’t know if anybody thought it was fair to him.”

In 33 appearances, Garcia was 1-2 with a 3.13 ERA and 1.04 WHIP to earn himself consideration for next season's bullpen.

“That’s part of why we’re doing this, because he deserves it," Francona said.

Garcia, a 10th-round Draft pick of the Phillies in 2016, spent all of '23 out of pro baseball before staging his comeback effort.

“The biggest thing is I just wanted an opportunity. I got an opportunity," Garcia said. "I kind of took it and ran with it. You know, I’m not done. My story doesn’t end here. I’m excited for Spring Training and next year and being able to fight for a spot on this team and fight to have this team part of a playoff push next year. Everything was awesome this year.”

Aguiar was summoned to piggyback innings behind starting pitcher Chase Burns against the Dodgers on Friday night after lefty Brandon Williamson was needed for two innings during Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Dodgers. 

In 2024, Aguiar made his big league debut for Cincinnati with seven starts before undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and missing all of 2025.

This season at Louisville, Aguiar is 2-5 with a 6.27 ERA in 12 starts.
