Simon Edvinsson still does not have a contract with the Detroit Red Wings. Edvinsson completed his entry-level contract with the Red Wings in the 2025-26 season, making him a restricted free agent. The blueliner reported to camp without a contract, but with no ability to play games or practice with the team, Edvinsson returned to Sweden to continue training.

Initial reports indicated that the Wings were trying to get a bridge deal done with the defenseman, but now there could be a long-term offer, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

“I do think one of the things that's happened in this is that Detroit has moved off the bridge,” Friedman said. “I think they're agreeable to a bridge, but I think they've also made some longer-term offers. I would assume it's not five years because that would tie him up with (fellow defenceman Moritz) Seider and I don't think they'd want Seider and Edvinsson up in the same year, but I do think they've made other offers.”

It was previously reported that Edvinsson has also requested a trade amid the stalemate on the contract.

“Detroit has maintained in last couple days that they're going to going to sign Edvinsson and they're going to get this done,” Friedman said. “But I also do believe, and there are practical reasons for this, that they have gauged his market.”

He is not the only player who has requested that the Red Wings trade him. Former captain Dylan Larkin has also requested that he be traded. There is one difference between the two situations. When Larkin is back healthy, he can play for the team. Edvinsson does not have a contract and will continue to train in Sweden.

The Red Wings are also still looking for their first win of the year. They have dropped their first two games and return to the ice on Tuesday night against the Ottawa Senators.
