Eighteen years on and the situation could hardly be more different. In the middle of September 2026, Bournemouth are about to embark on their first ever European campaign.

It is a magnificent achievement for one of the smallest clubs in the Premier League, but their sixth-place finish last term was fully deserved.

It was, however, a summer of change at the Vitality Stadium. Bournemouth did a good job of keeping their squad together, with Marcos Senesi the only major departure. 

But the loss of inspirational manager Andoni Iraola means the Cherries will be under new management in the Europa League than they were when they qualified for the tournament. 

Marco Rose is still waiting for his first win in the Premier League, with Bournemouth drawing three and winning one of their first four outings. 

Now it is time for the south coast side to turn their attention to Europe, a sentence their fans would once have never dreamed of uttering.

Bournemouth have had a mixed start to the season. 

They have only lost one Premier League game - and that was by a slender margin to Manchester City - but they are yet to emerge triumphant in the top flight under Marco Rose.

A major problem has been giving up leads. Bournemouth have been ahead in each of their four league fixtures, yet they have failed to win any of them.

Bournemouth are ending games poorly, so Real Sociedad may well have the last laugh in this one.

Mikel Oyarzabal played an important role in Spain’s World Cup success in North America over the summer.

Despite being linked with a move away from Real Sociedad in the transfer market, Oyarzabal continues to ply his trade in San Sebastian. 

Already a Real Sociedad legend, the long-serving forward enjoyed his most productive ever season in the first team in 2025/26, scoring 15 goals in La Liga and 18 times in all competitions.

He is yet to score this term, but Oyarzabal’s drought is likely to come to an end sooner rather than later.
