Presidents Cup Prize Money: Do Players Get Paid?

There is no traditional prize money at the Presidents Cup. The winning team do not split a tournament purse, and there is no extra winner’s cheque based on the final score.

For the 2026 Presidents Cup, however, the PGA Tour is paying each player, captain and assistant captain a $250,000 participation stipend. A PGA Tour spokesperson confirmed to Front Office Sports in September 2026 that the amount remains unchanged from the 2022 and 2024 editions.

The payment is fixed. It does not increase for winning the Presidents Cup, individual matches or points.

How much do Presidents Cup players receive?

Each player competing in the 2026 Presidents Cup receives a reported $250,000 stipend. The same amount goes to the two captains and their assistant captains.

Each team consists of 12 players, one captain and four assistant captains for payment purposes. That puts the calculated distribution at $4.25 million per team and $8.5 million across both teams.

Those totals are calculations based on the confirmed $250,000 individual payment and 17 compensated participants on each side. They are not an official tournament purse.

Does the Presidents Cup winner receive more money?

No. A golfer on the winning side receives the same $250,000 stipend as a golfer on the losing team.

Why is there confusion over whether players get paid?

Part of the confusion comes from the competition’s own terminology.

The current Presidents Cup FAQ still states that players are not paid for participating. However, that wording has not been updated to reflect the current payment system.

A PGA Tour spokesperson confirmed on 22 September 2026 that players, captains and assistant captains will each receive a $250,000 stipend at Medinah.

The Presidents Cup still has no traditional prize purse or performance-based winner’s payment. The $250,000 is a fixed participation stipend rather than prize money.

The most accurate description is therefore a participation stipend rather than performance-based prize money.

When did Presidents Cup players start receiving stipends?

The current $250,000 model began with the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow. It continued at Royal Montreal in 2024 and remains in place for Medinah in 2026.

Before the change, participants traditionally designated money for charitable causes rather than receiving the current unrestricted stipend.

Golf Channel reported in 2024 that the previous figure had been $150,000, with participants directing the money towards charities. From 2022, the amount increased to $250,000, and participants gained greater flexibility over how it was used.

Across the 2022, 2024 and 2026 competitions, the $250,000 stipend system represents a reported $25.5 million in total payments to players, captains and assistant captains.

What happens to the Presidents Cup’s charitable money?

Charitable giving remains a major part of the Presidents Cup even though its participant-payment system has changed.

The competition’s official community-impact page says more than $56.5 million has been donated to 475 charities across 18 countries since the Presidents Cup began in 1994.

The 2026 event has continued that programme around Chicago and DuPage County.

Confirmed initiatives have included $250,000 for First Tee – Greater Chicago and $250,000 for the DuPage County Crisis Recovery Center.

The Presidents Cup has also announced $150,000 contributions involving Metropolitan Family Services and the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, alongside smaller grants and donations to other Chicago-area organisations.

These charitable contributions are separate from the participant stipends.

Do Presidents Cup players have to donate their stipend?

No. The current payment is not restricted to charitable donations.

Participants can decide how to use the $250,000 distribution. They may support their own foundations or charitable causes, but the stipend is no longer required to go directly to a nominated charity.
