Premier League icon Shaka Hislop delivers health update after prostate cancer diagnosis

Shaka Hislop has urged more men to be screened for prostate cancer after providing an update on his own battle with the disease.

The former goalkeeper revealed in December that he had been diagnosed with a 'fairly aggressive prostate cancer'.

Hislop had first requested a PSA test during an annual physical exam which prompted a 'radical' prostatectomy in 2024.

However, he was later diagnosed with the disease despite an operation on his prostate gland.

A PSA test is a blood test used to check for prostate conditions.

Hislop provides cancer update

Hislop has now provided an update on his cancer battle, revealing he is 'doing well' but faces a journey across the upcoming years.

The 57-year-old joined Paul Hawksbee and Andy Jacobs live on talkSPORT on Tuesday.

Speaking on Hawksbee & Jacobs, he explained: "I’m doing well. I remain on medication, I will be for the next few years at least.

"But it seems to be, I don’t want to say it’s a remission because it’s still an ongoing process.

"But I had my blood work done just about a month ago and everything is progressing as you’d hope, so I’m happy about that.

"I recognise it’s going to be a little bit of a journey for a few years, but I’m strapped in and ready for it."

Urging other men to go for PSA tests, Hislop added: "Please go and get your PSA checked. It’s absolutely imperative.

"Without a prostate screening, I would not have caught mine and as I’ve mentioned in my message, mine turned out to be a fairly aggressive cancer.

"Who knows what story I’d be telling right now. So I will also add, I had no history of cancer, let alone prostate cancer, in my family.

"So don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security."

As a player, Hislop made 221 Premier League appearances for West Ham United, Newcastle United and Portsmouth.

He also had spells at both Reading and FC Dallas during his professional career.

The London-born stopper represented Trinidad and Tobago at international level.

Hislop won 26 caps for the Soca Warriors between 1999 and 2006.

He was also part of their squad for the 2006 World Cup, featuring twice on their only appearance at the finals.
