Pitt football managed to outlast the Virginia Tech Hokies in a thrilling game at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg on Friday. Despite losing starting quarterback Mason Heintschel to an injury on the fourth play of the second half, Pat Narduzzi’s team stayed composed and continued to execute offensively, eventually securing a hard-fought 35-33 victory over the Hokies.

During his post-game press conference, Narduzzi reflected on the significance of the win as he was satisfied with the result and planned to enjoy the win before turning his attention back to football.

“We find a way to get it done, and again, probably didn't play our best. We'll go back and watch that videotape, but it's a win, and I'm going to enjoy that for 24 hours for sure. That's a Friday night win, and enjoy a Saturday with the family,” Narduzzi said.

Virginia Tech controlled much of the first half and initially appeared to be in a strong position to hand Pitt its first loss of the season. The Hokies came out aggressively and built a 14-0 advantage before the Panthers gradually settled into the game. Pitt then answered with 21 consecutive points.

Even after surrendering control for stretches of the game, the Hokies still had a major opportunity to steal the win in the closing moments. Ethan Grunkemeyer led Virginia Tech on a 62-yard drive, moving the offense into position for John Love to attempt a 36-yard field goal with the clock winding down.

A made kick would have completed a dramatic comeback for the Hokies. However, Love’s attempt sailed wide left, allowing the Panthers to survive the late scare and leave Pitt with a narrow two-point victory.

With the win, Pitt improved to 5-0 on the season, marking the second time in the last three years that the Panthers have opened a season with five consecutive victories.
Pittsburgh will now turn its attention to its next matchup, as the Panthers are scheduled to return home to host North Carolina on Oct. 10.
