Three days after he was scratched from a start due to a sore left shoulder, Phillies All-Star left-hander Jesús Luzardo was placed on the 15-day injured list, interim manager Don Mattingly said on Tuesday.
The move, which can be backdated three days to Saturday, will keep Luzardo out for the remainder of the regular season, but Mattingly didn't rule out Luzardo making a postseason start. Philadelphia entered the day in the second NL Wild Card spot and 4 1/2 games behind the Braves in the NL East.
Luzardo has been one of baseballâÂÂs best pitchers this year, but the lingering shoulder issue prompted an MRI exam on Friday that led to him being scratched from his start against the Braves the next day.ÃÂ
Luzardo is 14-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 29 starts this season, striking out 221 and walking 52 in 178 2/3 innings. He was named the NL Pitcher of the Month for August.
