The Philadelphia Phillies initially appeared to dodge a major injury scare with Jesús Luzardo. That optimism didn't last long.

Philadelphia is placing Luzardo on the injured list after the left-hander wasn't feeling as well as the team expected Tuesday, according to The Athletic's Matt Gelb. Manager Don Mattingly said the situation remains uncertain, although the Phillies aren't ruling out Luzardo returning to make a postseason start.

That's a brutal development this close to October. Initial testing had provided some relief after Luzardo underwent an MRI on his injured elbow. The Phillies hoped they had avoided a significant problem, but his lack of progress has now forced the organization to shut him down for at least the immediate future.
