Penn State's 2027 recruiting class suffered a setback on Sunday, as quarterback Will Wood flipped his commitment to Boston College less than 24 hours after the Nittany Lions suffered their fourth straight Big Ten loss, falling 21-18 to Michigan.
Wood, a Westwood, Massachusetts, native who plays for Xaverian Brothers High School, originally committed to Penn State on May 15. His decision to join the Eagles will keep him in his home state, where he will play under Bill O'Brien, a former Nittany Lions head coach.
The 2027 prospect had attracted interest from several major college programs, including Arkansas, Maryland, North Carolina, Stanford, Syracuse, Wake Forest and West Virginia. Penn State offered him in April after quarterbacks coach Jake Waters watched him throw during the spring recruiting period. The Nittany Lions subsequently made him a priority because of his arm strength, mobility, football intelligence and leadership qualities.
Wood's departure leaves Penn State without a committed quarterback in its 2027 recruiting class. The program has 21 recruits in that group, which ranks No. 20 nationally in the 247Sports Team Composite.
Wood's rankings speak volumes about his value as a recruit. The 247Sports Composite places him at No. 505 nationally and No. 30 among quarterbacks in the 2027 cycle. He also ranks third in Massachusetts, according to the same composite rankings.
His high school production includes a standout junior campaign in which he helped the Hawks secure their third consecutive Massachusetts Division I state championship. Wood threw for more than 2,800 yards and recorded 42 touchdowns against just one interception, earning Catholic League Most Valuable Player honors. In the state championship game against St. John's Prep, he passed for 345 yards and five touchdowns.

Wood's switch marks the first time a Nittany Lions recruit has flipped his commitment during the 2026 season. Boston College, meanwhile, has increased its 2027 recruiting class to 29 commitments with the addition of the Massachusetts quarterback.
