It's no secret that the 2026 campaign has been a roller coaster for Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes. His play has been rather inconsistent, as he's been nowhere near his Cy Young-caliber self all year. While his play has been alarming, manager Don Kelly is not yet ready to hit the panic button.

During a guest appearance on MLB Radio, Kelly praised the 24-year-old right-hander for at least maintaining his work ethic throughout the season. After two incredible years to begin his career, Kelly is impressed with Skenes' approach during what's been considered a down year for the superstar pitcher.

“Paul set the bar so high in his first two years, having a sub-2.00 ERA, winning the Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year,” Kelly said. “I think the thing with Paul is the work ethic, the commitment to excellence, how he's continued to push himself, even through the first two years, and certainly this year, in trying to continue to grind to get better. He's been the same guy through all of it.

“Continues to work hard, continues to try to make adjustments, and did so as the season went on last year. And then this year, doing the same thing,” Kelly continued. “I think that there's been no excuses from him. He's such a pro in how he goes about it, and how he continues to work every single day to maximize his talents, and also go out there and do everything that he can to try to help us win every time he's on the mound.”

Although Paul Skenes hasn't been dominant this year, it's not like he's been absolutely dreadful either. His play would still be considered good for most in the league. Through 162.0 innings pitched this season, the three-time All-Star owns a 3.78 ERA and 1.130 WHIP while totaling 185 strikeouts.

He'll have a chance to end the campaign on a high note in one of his final appearances on Friday against the Kansas City Royals. That contest is scheduled to begin at 6:40 p.m. EST and will be the first of a three-game series in Pittsburgh.
