The Chiefs cruised to a win in their season opener against the Broncos thanks in large part to running back Kenneth WalkerâÂÂs big night and they moved to 2-0 in a much closer game against the Colts on Sunday night.
Walker shone again in the 33-30 overtime victory and finished the game with 178 yards from scrimmage. The big difference with the Chiefs offense this time around was that quarterback Patrick Mahomes joined him in putting up big numbers.
Mahomes threw for 382 yards, which is his most in a game since the 2023 season, and Walker was one of five players to catch at least four passes over the course of the night. After the game, Mahomes said that WalkerâÂÂs presence has helped open things up offensively for the Chiefs in all phases because of how much stress the defense is under from snap to snap.
âÂÂItâÂÂs fun for me,â Mahomes said. âÂÂHim running the ball, our offensive line driving off the ball the way theyâÂÂre driving off â itâÂÂs making the defense have to account for that. If not, weâÂÂre going to run the ball for 200 yards or whatever we did the week before. You want to be able to do it all. We showcased that we can throw the ball down the field, we can play action and can also still run the ball. I thought coach [Andy] Reid and coach [Eric] Bieniemy did a great job calling the game, mixing it in everywhere so they couldnâÂÂt get a good gauge on what we were doing.âÂÂ
The Chiefs will have to go on the road for the first time next weekend, although theyâÂÂll be heading to Miami to face the 0-2 Dolphins and that should provide the offense with an opportunity to keep things rolling at a high level.
