Another year, another heartbreak for the San Diego Padres. For years, they've attempted to capture their first World Series title in their franchise's history. However, they haven't even sniffed the World Series in the last two decades. This year, they were unable to get over the hump once again. This time, they lost to the Milwaukee Brewers in the Division Series, and it happened in the most heartbreaking fashion possible.

All three of the Padres' losses in the Division Series could have arguably been different if one play had gone their way. Game 1 saw a home run ball get caught in the Brewers' home stadium roof. Game 2 saw a pivotal line drive brush off the glove of Jake Cronenworth. And in Game 4, the ultimate heartbreaker happened.

Manny Machado hit a screaming fly ball that looked like it was destined to get out of the building. However, in a truly brutal twist for the Padres, Garrett Mitchell made an incredible catch to rob Machado of the home run. Had that ball left the building, it would have tied the game and swung the momentum towards San Diego.

Machado's reaction to the loss sums up how Padres fans feel about this series.

“It burns,” said Machado, per AJ Cassavell. “It's pain. This team, we fought all year, dealt with a lot as a group. Overcame a lot. It stings right now, for sure. But at the same time, proud of these guys, what they've accomplished, what they've done, what we did this year — a lot of great things.”

It was an incredibly close series between the two teams. The Padres and the Brewers actually were neck-and-neck the entire series. Even Brewers manager Pat Murphy acknowledged San Diego's prowess.

“The Padres, they’re a great team,” Murphy said. “They could have won it all, but that's just the postseason. The ball doesn't bounce your way. [Legendary late Brewers broadcaster Bob] Uecker knocks that ball down out of the rafters. And it's a different series. Chourio gets the hit off Miller, and it's a different series.
