The San Diego Padres found themselves in a bit of a dicey situation, bullpen-wise, towards the end of their dramatic 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of the NLDS. They had to call upon Michael King, the Padres' Game 2 starter, to come off the bullpen for the final two innings of the game, and he rose to the occasion by getting the final six outs of the contest.
One conspicuous absentee for the Padres on the night was Adrian Morejon, who would have been perfect to come off the pen for the ninth with two of the three batters due up for the Brewers being lefties. However, he wasn't healthy enough to pitch, leaving King out there to take on the responsibility of getting San Diego through.
After the game, Padres manager Craig Stammen said that Morejon is still dealing with a feeling of “stickiness” in his shoulder, so they did not want to force the issue by throwing him out to the mound, as per Darnay Tripp of NBC San Diego.
Morejon also wasn't able to pitch in Game 2, which is part of why Mason Miller had to go two innings in the Padres' walk-off loss against the Brewers. The 27-year-old lefty had to pitch two innings in their Game 1 loss to the Brewers, and he tweaked something in his shoulder in the aftermath of that outing.
Article Continues BelowThe good news is that the Padres did not completely rule out Morejon from a potential appearance in a do-or-die Game 4 on Wednesday night. It's not quite clear if Miller will be back for Game 4 after going on paternity leave prior to Game 3 with his wife, Jordan, going into labor on Tuesday afternoon to welcome their first child.
It will be all hands on deck for the Padres yet again on Tuesday, and one would think that Morejon will be doing everything in his power to try and suit up in yet another elimination game.
