Oklahoma fans are fed up with John Mateer after seeing the quarterback heavily struggle in the Sooners' 41-13 loss to the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.
Mateer is going through the fifth season of his collegiate career, his second with the Sooners. Having performed well at Washington State in 2024 and Oklahoma in 2025, the Sooners had high hopes for his growth leading them to success in his final campaign.
However, Georgia made him and the fans fall back down to earth. Mateer was unable to outmatch Bulldogs defenders throughout the course of the game. He completed 25 out of 34 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns, but committed two fumbles and an interception that proved to be costly at every turn.

Oklahoma fans did not take kindly to these huge errors. Wanting a better performance at quarterback, they called for his benching on social media. Here are some of their reactions.

Sounds crazy cause we lost by 28 but the first two turnovers should’ve been touchdowns with good throws. And two of his turnovers basically handed Georgia two touchdowns so you do the math that’s 28,” one fan said.
“Mateer put it on the carpet at the goal line and Georgia took a free ride the other way. Oklahoma's afternoon was already cooked — this just made it official,” another remarked.
“If OU loses three in a row, they may bench Mateer. If OU loses four in a row, they may fire his offensive coordinator. If OU finishes worse than 5-7, they’ll fire his head coach. Not until these things happen will you see any changes,” another commented.
The Sooners will look to bounce back in their next matchup, being at home. They are on a bye next week before resuming action by hosting the No. 1 Texas Longhorns on Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
