Ohio State football is looking like a national title contender after walloping Iowa 31-14 in a game that saw Jeremiah Smith set a new record. Ryan Day revealed the ‘most amazing thing' about him during a day when Smith made a bold proclamation about a possible Heisman Trophy winning season in Columbus, Ohio.

Smith shared that he is hoping to bring Ohio State a national championship while also responding truthfully when asked about his Heisman Trophy pose on the field in Iowa Stadium. Sideline reporter Jenny Dell asked him about the pose.

“That's definitely on my mind,” Smith said about the Heisman. “I gotta get to New York this year,” he added.

Ohio State's last Heisman Trophy winner was quarterback Troy Smith in 2006. The program sent finalists to New York City in 2025 (Julian Sayin), 2023 (Marvin Harrison), 2021 and 2022 (CJ Stroud), and 2019 (Chase Young and Justin Fields).

The Buckeyes have consistently produced type flight talent and competed for national championships under coach Day's leaderships, and the 2026 season looks like more of the same. Sayin passed for 324 yards and three touchdowns against the Hawkeyes while Smith snagged 11 of his passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. Ja'Kobi Jackson powered Ohio State's running game with 14 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown while Ohio State intercepted Iowa QB Hank Brown, making him a non-factor for most of the game.

Smith and the Buckeyes have two weeks until they tangle with the defending champion Indiana Hoosiers in Blooming, a game that could decide Heisman Trophy finalist spots and the Big Ten championship. Smith continues to cross more goals off of his list, and he's got at least two more big ones to go this season.
