The San Francisco 49ers are unfortunately dealing with several injuries early in the season, and the latest news doesn't make anything better. Nick Bosa suffered a calf injury in practice during practice, and he's expected to miss the next few weeks. As the team contemplates whether they should place him on injured reserve, there are some other things they have to consider.
“The 49ers can save $32 million against the cap by making Bosa a post June-1 cut in the offseason gonna have to show. He can stay healthy,” Gregg Rosenthal wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Bosa just tore his ACL last season and was able to get back on the field to start this year, but he's only played 70 snaps through two weeks. With uncertainty on how long he may be out, the future could be blurry on whether they want to keep him past this season.
Outside of Bosa, the 49ers are dealing with injuries to C.J. West, who was placed on injured reserve because of a knee injury, and they've also placed Sam Okuayinonu and tackle Alfred Collins on IR. Rookie defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. has a high ankle sprain that could force him to miss three to six weeks, and rookie Romello Height has a broken hand.
Right now, the 49ers are trying to figure out how they want to manage their IR list, as they can designate only eight players to come back from that list.
“There's a lot of variables there,” Shanahan said via ESPN's Nick Wagoner. “That's why it's not simple just to put everybody on IR return because then eventually you're not going to get one back. We're going to run out of them eventually, so that's what we're trying to balance out, see how those guys are this week. … It's complicated and we've got to guess.”
