The San Francisco 49ers have already addressed their defensive line by bringing DeForest Buckner back to the Bay Area. However, general manager John Lynch should not consider his work finished. If the 49ers want to turn their 6-1 start into a Super Bowl run, their next priority should be adding another proven wide receiver to an offense that has been battered by injuries.

Brock Purdy is playing at a high level, and Kyle Shanahan remains one of the league's best offensive minds. The problem is that San Francisco's receiving corps has been depleted, leaving the offense without enough reliable options. The 49ers should take advantage of the trade market and find another receiver before the November 10 deadline.

The 49ers cannot keep relying on an injury-depleted receiving corps

San Francisco's wide receiver room has been hit hard by injuries. Mike Evans is now sidelined, and Deebo Samuel is injured and out. Though both could return after the bye week. More updates will be released on their situations throughout the week.

Ricky Pearsall could miss the entire season. Demarcus Robinson and De'Zhaun Stribling are also on injured reserve, leaving the 49ers short on established options.

Christian Kirk recently returned from injured reserve, but the team still needs more consistent production from its receiving group. Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing, and Jordan Watkins are among the other available options, but relying on that group to carry the passing game for a handful of weeks is concerning.

The situation could improve as players return, but San Francisco should not wait for everything to fall into place. Even when Robinson and Stribling get healthy, another proven receiver would give Purdy a dependable target and provide Shanahan with more flexibility in the passing game.

Purdy deserves credit for keeping the offense competitive despite the absences. Still, the organization should not make his job harder than necessary. The Buckner trade addressed an immediate defensive need. Now, Lynch should look at the other side of the ball.

San Francisco has several potential trade targets

The receiver market could offer the 49ers multiple opportunities to improve their offense. Some teams will remain in the playoff race, while others could decide to sell if their seasons continue to unravel over the next two weeks. San Francisco needs to be ready when the right opportunity appears.

Keenan Allen could provide an experienced option who understands how to find openings against zone coverage. Josh Downs and Quentin Johnston are other names worth monitoring if their respective teams become willing to negotiate. George Pickens could offer a bombshell addition, although acquiring him would depend on whether Dallas owner Jerry Jones receives a worthy offer.

Brian Thomas Jr. and Jerry Jeudy could also be intriguing possibilities if their teams are willing to move them. Chris Godwin Jr. is another name to watch if Tampa Bay decides to make him available. His familiarity with Evans could be an added benefit if the two eventually reunite in San Francisco.

The goal should be to acquire a receiver who can make an immediate impact without sacrificing too much of the draft capital needed to maintain the roster in future seasons.

Lynch has already shown a willingness to make a deadline move by bringing Buckner back for a 2027 fourth-round pick. He should apply that same urgency to the receiver position if a suitable player becomes available at a reasonable price.

There are other areas worth addressing, including the offensive line, and Isaac Guerendo could eventually provide another option behind Christian McCaffrey if he returns this season. However, the receiver situation is too pressing to ignore.

Buckner's arrival gives the defensive line a needed boost. The next step is making sure Purdy has enough help to keep the offense dangerous. If a suitable receiver becomes available without requiring an excessive price, Lynch should make the call. The 49ers have a real chance to win a championship this season, and they should do everything within reason to give themselves that opportunity.
