The Nebraska football team is reeling right now. The Cornhuskers lost on Saturday to Illinois, 24-13, to drop to 5-4. Nebraska fans are getting very frustrated with Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule.

If Rhule does get the boot at Nebraska though, he would be owed an absolutely massive buyout.

“After Penn State fired James Franklin a year ago, Nebraska chose to extend Rhule through 2032, saddling the school with a buyout in the $60 million range,” Yahoo Sports reported.

Nebraska fired offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen in recent days, after offensive struggles in Big Ten play this year. Nebraska started out the season with a promising 5-0 record, but has dropped four straight.

“Holgorsen, who came from the Mike Leach offensive tree at Texas Tech, was never going to be a great fit in the Big Ten. Rhule hired him anyway. He was also going to be a square peg in a round hole building an offense around Dylan Raiola, a quarterback with limited mobility. Rhule hired him anyway,” Yahoo reported.

The Cornhuskers have had an up and down tenure under Rhule's leadership. He is in his fourth season at the school. He has posted back-to-back winning seasons, but the team is in danger this year of missing a bowl.

That is certainly not acceptable to Nebraska fans. The Cornhuskers of course were a national power under the legendary head coach Tom Osborne. Nebraska fans expect Rhule to win and compete for Big Ten titles.

Things get no easier for Nebraska moving forward. The Cornhuskers still have Big Ten games remaining this season with Iowa and Ohio State.

Time will tell if the Nebraska program moves on from Rhule any time soon. Nebraska is next in action against Rutgers on Saturday.
