NC State has fired general manager Andy Vaughn after Saturday's 31-28 loss to Stanford, according to On3's Noah Fleischman. The decision came shortly after the university dismissed head coach Dave Doeren, ending his 14-season tenure with the program.

Vaughn joined NC State in February 2023 after being appointed by Doeren to oversee the football team's recruiting and personnel operations. However, the Wolfpack fell short in their efforts to consistently attract highly ranked recruiting classes and bolster their roster through the transfer portal during his time in Raleigh.

NC State signed its best-ranked recruiting class under Vaughn in 2024, finishing at No. 28 nationally. The program subsequently dropped to No. 36 in the 2025 cycle and No. 46 in 2026. Its 2027 recruiting class currently ranks No. 43.

The Wolfpack initially experienced greater success in the transfer portal. NC State ranked No. 7 in the 2024 transfer portal index, per On3. Its subsequent groups fell considerably in the rankings, with the program finishing at No. 56 in 2025 and No. 57 during the most recent offseason.

Before joining the Wolfpack, Vaughn spent one year at Arizona State as the associate athletics director for player personnel. His previous experience also included serving as Miami's director of player personnel from 2019 to 2022, Arizona's senior director of recruiting and high school relations in 2018, and Nebraska's director of recruiting in 2017. Earlier in his career, he worked in player personnel positions at Nevada from 2012 to 2014 and Middle Tennessee State from 2008 to 2012.

Vaughn's departure coincides with a broader leadership shake-up amid NC State's disappointing 2026 campaign. The Wolfpack fell to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in ACC competition after losing to the Cardinal. The defeat followed setbacks against Virginia, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest, leaving the team facing an uphill battle to achieve bowl eligibility.

Doeren finished his NC State career with a 98-74 record, setting the program's record for coaching win. Despite earning 11 bowl invitations during his tenure, he never guided the Wolfpack to an ACC championship game or a 10-win season.

Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel, who joined the staff in 2019, will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. NC State has also announced a national search for Doeren's replacement.

The Wolfpack have five regular-season games remaining, beginning with a home matchup versus California on October 31, with matchups against Duke, Syracuse, Florida State and North Carolina concluding their schedule.
