On Tuesday afternoon, the Boston Celtics laid an egg to open up their season with a choke job loss to the Detroit Pistons on the road. The Celtics led this one by more than 20 points at one point in time, but they ended up coming away empty-handed, thanks in large part to a brutal game from Jayson Tatum.

Tatum shot just 6/23 from the field in this one and didn't knock down any of his three-point attempts, and fans on X, formerly Twitter, were quick to roast him for the ugly season debut.

“Jayson Tatum had 11 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 0 turnovers at halftime with the Celtics leading 58-45. He finished the game with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 11 assists, and 2 turnovers. Tatum went 1-10 FG, 0-3 3PT in the 2nd half,” noted ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel.

“Y’all just gotta realize Tatum will always be a robin and i’m here to help y’all cope,” wrote one fan.

“Worst Tatum game of the decade what is he doing right now,” added another.

Tatum indeed played the Robin role to Paul George on Tuesday. George was excellent in his Celtics debut, scoring 38 points on the afternoon, but unfortunately, his co-star didn't knock down nearly enough in the second half for Boston to stave off a big Pistons comeback.

Meanwhile, questions about the Celtics' late-game offense, which have hounded the team throughout Tatum's tenure, were certainly not answered with Tuesday's meltdown.

In any case, the Celtics will next hit the floor on Friday evening at home vs the reigning champion New York Knicks.
