Mississippi State football secured a 31-24 victory over the Missouri Tigers on Saturday. While the win allowed the Bulldogs to maintain their unbeaten start to the season, the game also became memorable for a major off-field achievement involving one of the program’s most recognizable traditions.

During Mississippi State’s matchup with Missouri at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi, 41,819 cowbells were rung simultaneously. The massive show of support helped Mississippi State set a new world record for the largest number of cowbells rung at the same time.

According to reports, more than 50 trained volunteers were positioned throughout the stadium to monitor the attempt. The volunteers conducted official counts at entry points and across different areas of the venue to verify the number of simultaneous cowbell ringers and confirm the record total.

Mississippi State previously held the official Guinness World Record after setting the mark in 2015. However, the record was later surpassed unofficially by a minor league hockey team in Milwaukee. That prompted Mississippi State student leaders to organize a stadium-wide effort designed to reclaim the distinction, as MSU Student Association President Keegan Figueroa explained.

“We still actually hold the Guinness World Record, but recently, a hockey team in Milwaukee set the unofficial world record, so we decided we couldn’t have that; so we were going to beat the elite world record. So if this goes how we hope it does, then we’ll hold every cowbell world record,” Figueroa said on Good Things with Rebecca Turner.

Mississippi State's previous record stood at 5,748 simultaneous cowbell ringers in a controlled arena environment, with the Milwaukee hockey team mark coming in at 6,768. Mississippi State’s new total far exceeded that figure.

The significance of the achievement goes beyond simply setting a world record, as cowbells have become deeply connected to the identity and gameday culture of Mississippi State. The school’s cowbell tradition dates back nearly a century and remains one of the defining features of home games in Starkville.

Mississippi State will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Bulldogs are scheduled to face the Alabama Crimson Tide.
