Mike McDaniel knows the Los Angeles Chargers offense hasn't performed up to their standard to start the 2026 season.
McDaniel is going through the first year of his Chargers stint as offensive coordinator. This comes after he spent four years with the Miami Dolphins as their head coach.
Los Angeles is often in the picture for playoff contention, having garnered big regular-season victories over the years. However, they have taken steps back to start 2026 after losing to the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders. They've scored 28 points total, scoring 14 against Arizona and 14 against Las Vegas. McDaniel spoke with media on Thursday, per reporter Kris Rhim. When it came to simplifying the offense, the coordinator didn't hesitate to be honest with his insight into the situation.
“Of course I consider. I consider pretty much everything. What's important for my position is that if I'm saying not to overreact either way, good or bad, I can't do the same. I have to assess,” McDaniel said.
“… What I know how to do is evolve. And so I think it's kind of lazy to just say, ‘Okay, there's the result. Not good. Let's do the opposite.' That's not why I'm here. That being said, you don't just point a finger and say, ‘Well, it worked before.' So I think all of that is being taken under consideration.”

Mike McDaniel, Justin Herbert and the Chargers have time to regain themselves with the season still early. However, it will have to be quick as the games won't get easier. For McDaniel, his position would be at stake if things worsen for the playoff-aspiring squad.
Los Angeles' next five games feature opponents that have strong cases as serious contenders. Buffalo, Seattle, Denver, and the Rams stand out among the bunch, presenting concern for the Chargers if they don't get it together soon.
The Chargers seek their first win of the season when they gear up for their next matchup, being on the road. They take on the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. ET.
