On Tuesday, the New York Mets fanbase went through a rollercoaster of emotions as Pete Alonso played his second game in Citi Field as a member of the Baltimore Orioles. But the overwhelming sentiment from Mets fans continues to be yearning. Many Mets fans believe that Alonso never should have been allowed to leave in the first place, and they made those feelings very clear when Alonso hit a home run to tie the game in the ninth inning — the 300th long ball of his career.

Alonso did hit that historic home run of his against a former teammate of his in Kodai Senga, a starting pitcher turned closer for the Mets. Senga has been doing well in a relief role after transitioning in the middle of the season, but the Orioles slugger got to him, and Baltimore eventually won the game in extra innings.

Senga was yet to blow a save before tonight's action, and to do so against a former teammate must be bittersweet. But for the Japanese international, the reception Alonso got from the Mets faithful when he hit that home run, which eventually doomed New York on the night, was indicative of how beloved he was by the fanbase.

“In terms of Pete, I've first-handedly watched him be a tremendous hitter for many years. The crowd reaction, you can really tell he was loved by this fanbase,” Senga said through an interpreter, via SNY Mets on X.

The reaction from fans in Citi Field stunned the Mets players, with Sean Manaea admitting that this was the first time he's seen a road team get cheered like that. But Alonso means so much to the fanbase, and the Mets' disastrous 2026 campaign has made their yearning for their former first baseman that much stronger.

No one is saying that Alonso's presence would have prevented the Mets' cataclysmic 2026 season. However, it simply may be too much for some fans to have the knife get twisted deeper into their gut by witnessing a beloved player continue to tear it up, but for another franchise.
