The New York Mets saw the return of a familiar face on Monday night. Former Mets star Pete Alonso, who now plays with the Baltimore Orioles, returned to Queens for the first time as an Oriole. Alonso was showered with cheers by Mets fans as he stepped up to bat for the first time.

That same sentiment wasn't shared by fans for Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns. According to a Reddit thread, Mets fans were chanting “Fire Stearns” during New York's game with Baltimore Monday.

Baltimore defeated New York, 2-1. The Mets were officially eliminated from the Major League Baseball Playoffs, although Mets fans knew for weeks that it wasn't going to happen.

Mets fans are angry with Stearns, who helps oversee a massively large payroll. New York has spent millions upon millions the last few years to bring in Juan Soto, Luis Robert Jr., Devin Williams and many others to the team. The club however wasn't able to keep Alonso after the 2025 season.

Those “Fire Stearns” chants were heard loudly at Citi Field on Monday. Many New Yorkers clearly want the executive gone.

“On an emotional night in Queens, it was a reminder that six weeks of solid baseball do not undo the four horrid months that preceded it, that Stearns’ own reputation with the fanbase in Queens is still very much intertwined with his decision to let Alonso walk away,” The Athletic reported.

The Mets are 69-81 on the campaign. New York is last in the National League East, with this disastrous season mercifully winding down. The club does have wins though in six of their last 10 games.

New York is in action again against Baltimore on Tuesday.
