The Toronto Blue Jays earned a 5-1 victory against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. At 76-77, Toronto currently trails the Chicago White Sox by 1.5 games for the final American League Wild Card spot. Reaching the postseason won't be easy for this Blue Jays ball club. Veteran starting pitcher Max Scherzer revealed how the team can get the job done while speaking to reporters on Wednesday, via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.

“We have to win ball games,” Scherzer said. “Our backs are against the wall. We’ve got to come out fighting and clawing, and keep finding ways to win ball games.”

Scherzer is doing everything he can to help the Blue Jays. He turned in five innings of one-run baseball in a winning effort on Wednesday. He only recorded three strikeouts and he did walk three hitters, but the 42-year-old still found a way to turn in a respectable performance on the mound.

Of course, the Blue Jays are going to need a complete team effort down the stretch. After reaching the World Series a season ago, this ball club has been rather inconsistent throughout the campaign. Nevertheless, they still hope to reach the postseason.

Toronto has a huge series coming up next. The Texas Rangers are also battling for the final AL Wild Card spot, and the teams will play in a three-game series beginning on Friday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX. First pitch for the contest on Friday is scheduled for 8:05 PM ET as the Blue Jays look to earn a big win on the road.
