As the Dallas Mavericks opened their doors on Friday morning to prepare for Media Day, the team also announced one final addition to its training camp roster. Dwight Powell, who has been the veteran leader in Dallas for years, has re-signed with the Mavs before the start of training camp.

Although the team did not release the terms of this contract, sources told ClutchPoints that Powell's deal is non-guaranteed.

Dallas already has 15 players on standard contracts, so the team would need to cut at least one player to keep Powell around entering the 2026-27 season. Moussa Cisse is the only player under contract with a non-guaranteed deal, but he is a player the Mavs value highly and made sure to retain this summer.

While they are allowed to carry a maximum of 21 players on their training camp roster, the Mavericks are kicking things off with only 19 players on the roster after signing Powell. The 35-year-old center is the only player on the Mavs' training camp roster not on a two-way deal or a standard contract.

He will compete for a roster spot over the next few weeks leading up to the start of the 2026-27 season, especially with Dereck Lively II still sidelined and working his way back from foot surgery. Lively has not been cleared for training camp and is slowly beginning to ramp up his basketball activities.

To this point, the Mavs have not yet said whether Lively will be ready for the start of the new season.

Even though Powell has not played much through the years for the Mavs, he's been embraced by the entire organization for his leadership and presence in the locker room. Many have compared his role in Dallas to that of Udonis Haslem's with the Miami Heat near the end of his career.

Last season, Powell appeared in 63 games and started in 12 games, averaging 3.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 64.4 percent from the floor.

Regardless of whether he makes the final roster or not, Powell will remain around the organization and help aid in the work ethic and professionalism of the young players on this roster.
