Coach Mike Locksley's Maryland football team, shorthanded since the start of the year, hit rock bottom in Week 4's 54-3 loss to the UCLA Bruins at SECU Stadium in College Park. The Terps were held to 181 total yards including 42 from highly ranked tight end Dorian Fleming, leading Locksley to address the media afterward.
Locksley attempted to calm the situation in comments made to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, expressing confidence in he and his teams' abilities.
“I still have a lot of confidence in myself and the staff to get this thing fixed. That will have to be earned…I'm going to have to earn it. I'm not going to be able to claim it up here,” Locksley said.
Article Continues BelowThe Terps head coach added that he plans to have a regular meeting with athletic director Jim Smith in an effort to put his team in position to perform better in the future.
Locksley was named Terrapins interim head coach in 2015 after former coach Randy Edsall was fired by the program. He was hired as the team's head coach in 2019 and had winning seasons from 2021 to 2023 including three straight bowl game wins. The Terrapins were expected to be competitive this season with returning, budding star quarterback Malik Washington, but Washington did not perform well against the Bruins.
Washington completed 18-of-38 with zero touchdown passes and four interceptions. Maryland will next hit the road to take on Nebraska at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, a Week 5 game that could determine where Locksley's team ends up from here on out.
