Maryland fired defensive coordinator Ted Monachino on Sunday, a day after the team allowed at least 35 points in a fifth consecutive loss.

Monachino is in his second season at Maryland after two years on the North Carolina staff. Co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim will serve as Maryland's primary defensive coordinator going forward, with inside linebackers coach Zac Spavital serving as co-defensive coordinator.

"I appreciate Ted's hard work and dedication to our program during his time in College Park," Maryland coach Mike Locksley said in a statement. "As I evaluate our program, I believe this change is necessary. We wish Ted all the best moving forward."

Monachino spent part of his career in the NFL, including two years as the Colts' defensive coordinator.

Maryland allowed 37 points Saturday in a home loss to Rutgers, and has surrendered 219 points during the team's five-game slide. The Terps are tied for 127th nationally in points allowed and 83rd in yards allowed.

The school has yet to make a decision on the future of Locksley, who is 39-54 in his eighth season but just 10-21 since the start of 2024. Maryland has an open week before hosting Illinois on Oct. 31.
