Marshall Faulk and Southern University pulled off the season's biggest win, beating defending SWAC champion Prairie View A&M 28-14. The Jaguars bounced back after a shocking 41-10 homecoming loss to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, despite several key players missing. They bounced back in magnificent fashion, largely thanks to scrappy defensive play.
Herman Brister III pulled off two interceptions for 56 yards, including a game-ending pick-six that gave Prairie View A&M a 28-14 lead as they looked to drive and ultimately tie the game. Prairie View A&M's Tevin Carter had an uncharacteristic game. In Saturday's matchup, he had thrown only one interception against Mississippi Valley last week. Carter finished with 179 yards and one touchdown on 20 of 33 passing attempts, with three interceptions. He also ran for 50 yards on 15 carries.
While Christian Johnson put up heavy passing yardage, throwing for 207 yards and two touchdowns with 9.4 yards per pass, he completed only 9 of 22 passes. Trey Holly drove the offense, finishing with 122 yards and one touchdown on 29 carries. Johnson helped Holly on the ground, totaling 34 yards on 9 carries, and Mike Franklin finished with 27 yards on 11 carries. Southern dominated time of possession, holding the ball for 33 minutes and 36 seconds and forcing four turnovers, including one fumble.
