The Los Angeles Lakers recently announced their intentions to honor former NBA head coach Phil Jackson with a statue alongside the many the franchise has that adorn the walkway outside of their home Crypto.com Arena. Jackson had some of his most successful seasons at the helm of the Lakers, and a statue makes sense as part of the team’s storied history. But for former Lakers star Magic Johnson, the main architect of the franchise’s glory years, the late Jerry Buss, should receive similar treatment.

Responding to an article written by The California Post’s Lakers beat reporter Khobi Price suggesting that Jerry Buss should be next to be honored with a statue, Magic Johnson took to social media to emphatically agree.

“I 100% agree that Dr. Jerry Buss the greatest franchise owner in sports history and deserves a statue in front of Crypto arena soon in his honor,” Johnson wrote.

Johnson is among the Laker legends that have a statue outside the arena, alongside teammate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Pat Riley and Chick Hearn.

Buss was reportedly the driving force behind the Lakers drafting Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft. During his tenure with the team, Johnson helped lead the franchise to five NBA championships in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988.

Buss originally purchased the Lakers from Jack Kent Cooke the same year the organization drafted Johnson. The team had remained under the family’s ownership even after his death through his children, until being sold to Mark Walter, a business partner of Johnson, last summer. Walter has since reached an agreement to sell the team to the duo of Bob Iger and Josh Kushner.

Under the Buss Family leadership, the Lakers have won 11 NBA championships.
