Nic Maddinson, who underwent treatment for testicular cancer last year, has been called up to Australia's Test squad in South Africa along with uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Sam Harper.
Cameron Green is in doubt for the opening Test match of the series in Durban after suffering an abdominal injury in the final ODI on Wednesday, while Josh Inglis has been officially ruled out with a fractured finger.
Maddinson, who previously played three Tests against South Africa and Pakistan in 2016, has yet to play a first-class match since undergoing chemotherapy in mid-2025. He returned to play the BBL for Sydney Thunder and a second XI game for NSW in the 2025-26 season but did not feature in the Sheffield Shield.
Maddinson was named NSW's Sheffield Shield captain last month, but the competition only starts next week. He made 126 against Victoria in the One-Day Cup last week. The uncapped Harper will join the tour from the Australia A series in India, where he made a century in the second four-day game.
"Sam gives us wicketkeeping cover as Josh continues his recovery while Nic provides flexibility throughout the batting order," chair of selectors George Bailey said.
Matt Renshaw, who took a blow on the wrist in the final ODI, has been cleared of injury. Inglis could yet return to the tour with his fractured finger to be further assessed ahead of the second Test in Gqeberha.
