Coach Dan Campbell's Detroit Lions headed to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in Week 5 action amid question marks surrounding defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. The Lions gave up the first touchdown of the game but roared back to score the next 24 points, led by team leader Jared Goff, as an injury put a damper on their performance.
Lions writer Colton Pouncy of The Athletic shared the news that linebacker Devin White was carted off the field. White had one tackle for the Lions' Jack Campbell and Sheppard led defense but his injury added to the long list of setbacks in recent months for Detroit. Pouncy said that White suffered a forearm injury.
Video showed White took a direct blow to his left forearm.
White is a former fifth round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the 2019 NFL Draft. He played collegiately for the LSU Tigers and has had nine tackles in two games including two starts for Campbell's team so far this season.
Sheppard's defense has been reeling from the absence of star safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. Branch returned to practice this week but missed the Cardinals game as he is still working to get back from a torn Achilles tendon in his right leg suffered late last year.
The Lions looked to improve to 3-2 on the season as they held a 24-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. White's injury was emblematic of a Detroit team that has continued to suffer massive losses on defense in recent years, from the defensive line to the linebacking corps to the secondary.
