New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown has been reunited with the 2019 Golden State Warriors' second overall pick James Wiseman ahead of the 2026-27 season. The Knicks also invited veteran guard John Konchar to a training camp deal, in addition to Wiseman, as the two will fight for a roster spot this fall.

Brown, in taking a chance on Wiseman, could have high hopes for the former Warriors prospect center, as NBA insider Marc Stein per The Stein Line.

“If Wiseman makes the Knicks' Opening Night roster, it will cement a reunion for the former No. 2 overall pick with former Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown,” Stein wrote. “Brown is better known now, of course, as the first championship-winning coach in Gotham since Red Holzman more than 50 years ago, but don't forget that he was with Wiseman for his first two seasons as a Warrior as an aide on Steve Kerr's staff.”

“Word is that Brown, furthermore, is indeed a Wiseman fan. The newly crowned champs likewise do appear to have a clear need for a third big man behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond,” Stein added. “So it will be fascinating once again this October to watch how the Knicks manage these tough end-of-the-roster choices given that Konchar, Brown and Agbaji all have something to offer as well.”

Last season, the Knicks invited Landry Shamet, Malcolm Brogdon, Garrison Matthews, Matt Ryan and Alex Len to training camp. After Brogdon unexpectedly retired, Shamet made the team and went on to establish himself as a key contributor for the eventual title-winners. He also agreed to a four-year, $24 million contract extension ahead of the upcoming season.

Wiseman last played for the Indiana Pacers on a 10-day contract in 2025-26. Wiseman hasn't received steady playing time since the 2022-23 campaign, when the Warriors traded him to the Detroit Pistons midseason. He averaged 12.7 points and 8.1 rebounds in 24 games for the Pistons that season.
