While the Detroit Lions and their fans keep linebacker Jack Campbell in their prayers, they received some encouraging news on offensive lineman Cade Mays. The 27-year-old center suffered a low ankle sprain, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Any injury is obviously unwelcome, especially in a fiercely competitive NFC North, but this is a positive update all things considered.

Fans may struggle to be optimistic, however. Mays missed the first six games of the campaign due to a fractured wrist and only played 22 snaps in Sunday's 19-15 win versus the formerly undefeated Minnesota Vikings. The Lions signed him to a three-year, $25 million contract in free agency because they believe he can be an impactful presence in the trenches, but they have been denied the chance to see their vision fully come to fruition.

Through 90 snaps this season, the 2022 sixth-round draft pick (Carolina Panthers) has allowed one sack, one hurry and two total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. Detroit has already had its bye week, so head coach Dan Campbell and his staff will need to be extra careful in how they manage players' health.

Fortunately, the Lions' offense has been operating quite smoothly despite Mays' limited involvement. Jahmyr Gibbs has amassed an NFL-leading 1,058 scrimmage yards and 10 total touchdowns in just seven games. Cue the MVP discussions. Jared Goff has thrown 15 touchdowns to just one interception, which came against the Vikings' vaunted defense. Amon-Ra St. Brown ranks fifth among pass-catchers with 53 receptions and also boasts 571 receiving yards and five TDs.

Put it all together, and Detroit is first in total yards per game (395.4) and third in points per game (29.0). Reliable blocking is required to maintain this standard. The Lions (5-2) will monitor Cade Mays' status leading into Sunday afternoon's meeting with the Miami Dolphins (1-6).
