The Los Angeles Chargers could not secure a win in their season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Justin Herbet and his teammates faced a Cardinals team with an all-new coaching staff. Arizona did not need much time to adjust to its new surroundings.

Los Angeles did not do too well on the offensive side of the ball. Herbert threw for a touchdown and 209 yards in the loss. However, his team only accumulated 268 yards of offense against Arizona. After the game, Herbert was pretty adamant that the team's issues came down to execution.

“We didn’t execute on third down and we had too many turnovers… I think it’s just on us to go out and execute the game plan… It’s on us to be able to execute the protection plan,” the Chargers quarterback said, via Kris Rhim of ESPN.

Los Angeles certainly came into this game viewed as a favorite to win. But Arizona relied on veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett on Sunday. He threw for 277 yards on 37 pass attempts against the Chargers. Tight end Trey McBride was a favorite target, catching nine passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.

The Chargers did not do well in important downs, either. They were 2-for-8 in third-down conversions and failed on all three fourth-down tries.

Los Angeles can take solace in the fact that this is just one game. They still have 16 games left, and more opportunities to put this performance behind them. The Chargers are in action again on September 20 against Kirk Cousins and the Las Vegas Raiders.
