The Carolina Panthers' strong start to the season has been fun to watch. While they've gone 1-1 to start the year, their performances have been quite impressive to watch. Unfortunately, an injury to one of their key players puts a damper on their campaign. Backup running back Jonathon Brooks has done a solid job behind Chuba Hubbard this year. Unfortunately, Ian Rapoport reports that Brooks will head to the IR after undergoing surgery.
“#Panthers RB Jonathan Brooks, who left Sunday’s win early, is expected to have surgery today to repair a core muscle injury that will land him on Injured Reserve, sources say,” Rapoport posted on X. “Brooks is out at least 6 weeks, but should return with plenty of time to contribute down the stretch.”
With Brooks out for the foreseeable future, the Panthers are looking for help at the RB position. Jordan Schultz says that former Los Angeles Chargers star Austin Ekeler will be visiting the team, opening the door for him to join the team.
Ekeler suited up last season for the Washington Commanders. Unfortunately, an Achilles tear prematurely ended his season after just two games. In his last healthy season in 2024, Ekeler recorded 367 yards in 12 games along with four touchdowns on the ground. While Ekeler's prime days are behind him, he might still be good as a backup option for the Panthers this season.
Hubbard has been solid for the Panthers over the last two seasons. Through two games, he's had 102 total rushing yards and a touchdown, while also adding two more receiving touchdowns for the team.
The Panthers will take on the Cleveland Browns in Week 3, as they look to maintain control of the NFC South. They are currently tied with the New Orleans Saints at 1-1 to start the year.
