The Delhi Capitals skipper will captain Mumbai in the Super League stage of the Senior Women's T20 Trophy in Ahmedabad from November 14, following her 107-run knock against Pondicherry.
Star Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues has been appointed captain of Mumbai for the Super League stage of the Senior Women's T20 Trophy, which takes place in Ahmedabad from November 14. The appointment follows a match-winning performance in the league stage that secured Mumbai's progression to the knockout phase.
Rodrigues struck 107 off 47 balls against Pondicherry in the sixth and final league stage match, played in Pune on Friday, November 6. Her innings propelled Mumbai to an 83-run victory and ensured the team topped its group on net run rate, earning a place in the Super League. Head coach Ajay Kadam praised the quality of her batting display.
"Jemi's century yesterday was quite good, because the ball wasn't coming nicely on the bat. There was low bounce, it wasn't a flat pitch, but she placed the ball well, piercing the gap between two fielders, instead of trying to hit the ball hard. She played very smartly; it was a smartly built innings, as, realising the nature of the wicket, she didn't want to go for big shots. She came to bat in the fifth over of the innings and started off with two paddle sweeps, which got her two twos, and then gave us the necessary momentum. She paced her knock well and got to her century in the last over," Kadam was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
How did Rodrigues construct her match-winning century?
Rodrigues is returning to competitive cricket after a four-month hamstring injury layoff. Despite joining the team late in the league stage, she made an immediate impact with her performances. In an earlier league match against Delhi, she scored 58 off 41 balls, showcasing her ability to build an innings. She also contributed 26 not out off 19 balls in a nine-over game against Uttar Pradesh.
"Jemimah was fine with that. She has no issues with that. She's a team player. Jemimah has definitely added a lot of energy to our dressing room. She has gained vast experience by now. Her presence matters a lot. The girls look up to her. She joined the team after a few matches, but since then, has played her role very well. She has lifted the team to a whole new level, given them confidence. She is a star," the coach added.
Rodrigues currently captains Delhi Capitals in the Women's Premier League, bringing leadership experience to her new role with Mumbai. Her appointment marks a significant development in the Senior Women's T20 Trophy as the tournament moves into its Super League phase.
