Jayden Daniels responded to Stefon Diggs' costly penalty

Jayden Daniels watched Stefon Diggs get in the way of a huge two-point conversion attempt.

Washington's quarterback didn't like what he saw and didn't hesitate to call out the Commanders' veteran wide receiver.

"You just got to be smarter," said Daniels, after Washington fell 24-22 to the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Daniels was inconsistent in Week 1 and his passing number (18-of-34, 164 yards, two touchdowns, 85.9 rating) didn't match up to Jalen Hurts' winning precision.

But Daniels connected with Diggs on a 10-yard TD pass with 9 minutes and 59 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

That score pulled Washington within 17-15 on the road vs the favored Eagles, who entered Week 1 in the top 10 of talkSPORT's NFL power rankings.

But instead of calling a two-point conversion play that could have allowed the Commanders to tie the game at 17-all in the final period, Washington was forced to settle for an extra-point kick and frustratingly remain one point behind the Eagles.

That's because Diggs celebrated his TD by sprinting through the end zone, dropping the ball and leaping onto the goal-post padding.

A 15-yard penalty followed for unsportsmanlike conduct, and the Eagles held on for a 24-22 win.

"Diggs has been in this far longer and should have known better," one fan tweeted.

"Diggs do stupid s*** all the time," a second fan wrote.

"Diggs is an idiot for doing that and the QB takes the blame," a third fan posted.

While Daniels acknowledged that the penalty hurt the Commanders, the third-year QB took the high road and ultimately blamed himself.

"That's on me for not reiterating that in the huddle," Daniels said.

"We've just got to be smart. There's a time and place for everything."

Fans weren't buying into Daniels' self-blame, though, and directly pointed the finger at a controversial receiver who had problems in New England and Minnesota.

"Diggs is a moron," one fan posted. "He is all about himself and doesn't care about the team. Never has, never will."

FOX announcer Tom Brady also blasted the Commanders for an eventual two-point conversion call that fell short in the final minute.

Daniels threw a 1-yard TD to Antonio Williams.

But on the two-point attempt, Washington called a shovel pass to tight end John Bates, who was quickly brought down by Eagles defender Moro Ojomo.

“In big-time moments, you’ve got to think about players, not plays,” Brady said. “They run the shovel pass to Bates … that’s a pretty easy stop for the Eagles defense."
