Speaking with Colton Sulley of The Oklahoman, Witten addressed the team's struggles and explained the message he delivered to his players during the transition. “Ultimately, we haven’t coached very well and haven’t gotten the results we wanted,” Witten said. “I told them what they could expect from me.”

Witten also made it clear that he wanted players committed to the challenge. He understood that some might question the coaching change. However, he urged them to focus on moving forward as a team. This came after Oklahoma's response following its loss to South Carolina.

“Hey, listen, you don't want to be here. I understand that. Go see coach Venables. But here's what we're (going to) do — we're (going to) figure it out,” Witten told the players.

The interim coordinator also stressed the importance of responding to adversity with the right mindset. He challenged the Sooners to approach the situation with purpose and take responsibility. Witten reminded them that fixing their struggles would require a united effort.

“This wasn't one person doing this. This is about the team,” Witten explained.

His message seemed to connect with the locker room. Oklahoma's players quickly rallied behind their new coordinator. After the game, they even doused Witten with Gatorade during the celebration. The moment highlighted the support he had earned in a short time. It also capped a demanding week for the former NFL tight end.
