It’s starting to feel like 2007 again in the college football landscape as every week feels even crazier than the last. The Big 12 had took the crown for craziest conference this week with Texas Tech and BYU losing to unranked opponents, while the middle of the Big Ten all seemed to lose their must win games.
Texas managed to keep their playoff hopes alive with a big win over Ole Miss. As more teams continue to drop winnable games, it’s starting to look like at least one three loss team will find themselves in the playoffs at the end of the year.
The Big Ten and SEC have been battling back and forth all year on which conference is better, but are either even that good?
More so, is anyone in college football elite this year?
The transer portal has succeeded in providing a substantial level of parity, but that has also seemed to limit the top end of college football from separating from the pack.
Let’s just take a quick look at the top 10 right now, each of these teams has some flaw or poor performance. Miami has played the worst schedule in the country and had to go to overtime to beat a four loss Florida State. Ohio State choked away a big win at Texas, then struggled offensively against Indiana and are without Julian Sayin.
Georgia got their big win over Alabama, then immediately lost at home to Auburn. Indiana lost at home to Ohio State and Josh Hoover stinks. Utah keeps sneaking out wins, but Devon Dampier continues to have a massive turnover problem against any team with a pulse.
Notre Dame has played a very easy schedule and lost one of the two games they needed to win. UCLA’s defense is awesome but they still haven’t faced a team currently in the top 25 so they might be smoke and mirrors.
Kentucky got destroyed at home to Alabama, and have won two games in overtime by one point, so they’re on upset alert at any moment. BYU has played one complete game against Notre Dame and then Bear Bachmeier remembered he can’t play on schedule and regressed to being a pumpkin. Last and maybe least, Alabama’s offense goes back and forth each week between being the least competent unit in the country and the best in the nation.
The further down the rankings you travel, the worse this exercise goes. Most years when the playoffs roll around, it’s maybe a two horse race for the national championship, but it could genuinely be 10-15 different teams. Notre Dame and Georgia are the two current favorites, and if I had to choose between them, I would feel a lot better about betting on a tested Bulldogs squad over a Notre Dame team that might fail it’s only two tests they face all season.
