It's the first meeting between Ipswich and Arsenal in this competition since 2011, when the Gunners overcame a shock first-leg defeat to win 3-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

But they have faced each other more recently in the Premier League, with Arsenal winning both fixtures during the 2024/25 season.

Both sides head into this clash off the back of weekend league victories away from home, Ipswich edging a 3-2 thriller against Crystal Palace and Arsenal earning a hard-fought 2-0 triumph over Sunderland.

While Ipswich have only gone beyond the third round of the Carabao Cup once since that run to the semis 15 years ago, Arsenal have fallen at this hurdle just once in the last 11 years.

Ipswich vs Arsenal: Team news

Both managers are expected to ring the changes amid a packed early-season schedule.

For Gary O'Neil's Ipswich, that could mean starts for the likes of Marcelo Nunez – who bagged a brace in the second-round win over Leicester – and summer arrival Chuba Akpom, on target in the recent Premier League loss to Manchester United.

As for Arsenal, Mikel Arteta may take the opportunity to give Max Dowman his first minutes of the season.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Viktor Gyokeres and Bruno Guimaraes, who opened his Gunners account in stunning style against Sunderland, could also start.

Speaking after the weekend win over Palace, O'Neil was understandably full of praise for his team.

"Fantastic character, three good goals and we look like a threat," he said.

"Plenty of positives. There is lots we need to improve, but in terms of character, there was some big pluses."

Meanwhile, reflecting on his side's victory at Sunderland, Arteta highlighted the contribution of Guimaraes.

"Unbelievable, but again the personality that he has, and this was a special game for him as well, what it means for him," he said.

"How he grabs the game, making decisions that he's made. The goal was incredible, and the assist as well to Bukayo [Saka] to put him through. I'm really impressed with him."
