MINNEAPOLIS — Over the course of the Timberwolves’ preseason, the fit between LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards, which has been deemed questionable by many, has been seamless.
“If you look at the shots that Ant was able to make last night, they were all super easy,” said Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch after the Timberwolves’ preseason bout with the defending champion New York Knicks. “A lot of them were generated through LaMelo's playmaking.”

Through the Timberwolves’ preseason action, the organization has made it abundantly clear that building continuity amongst the new look group is a priority. Outside of just one game, the starters have all played significant minutes — a change of pace from how preseason is often utilized across all major sports.
What has stood out regarding the chemistry between Ball and Edwards, specifically, has been the unselfishness from two players whose usage rates have both exceeded 30 percent each of the past three seasons, according to Basketball Reference.
In addition to two play styles that have worked well together thus far, with skip passes across the perimeter, and unselfish play when playing downhill, the energy around the team surrounding their two best players seems infectious — a necessary and well-documented change of pace from previous iterations of Timberwolves rosters.
“We've been a moody team in last few years…has gotten in our way,” said coach Finch. “We've traded moodiness for giddiness, so, we've gotta get to some sort of happy medium.”

While there were aforementioned questions about the fit between the two stars, it seems that both players have completely bought into each other’s game and play style in a way that neither player has yet engaged in as seriously in their careers. For Edwards, the closest thing he has had to a co-star of this caliber is Karl-Anthony Towns, though their fit was significantly different, as KAT plays out of the front court. The fit between Ball and Edwards should continue to evolve, but all signs have pointed in a promising direction thus far.
