The 32-year-old all-rounder has been advised two weeks of complete rest after scan reports confirmed a right shin injury, ending his chances of featuring in the upcoming white-ball tour.
Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of India's white-ball tour of New Zealand after sustaining a fresh injury to his right shin. Scan reports confirmed the development on September 26, 2026, and the 32-year-old has been advised complete rest for two weeks, making participation in either leg of the tour impossible.
The New Zealand T20I series is scheduled to begin on October 22, 2026, and is followed by an ODI series. Given the mandatory rest period and the rehabilitation time required after it, there is no realistic path for Pandya to return before the tour concludes.
"This is very unfortunate, but Hardik's latest scan reports have revealed an injury to his right shin. He has been advised complete rest for a period of two weeks. BCCI's medical panel head Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala has seen his reports and, on his return from Japan, will assess him and decide on when he can start his rehabilitation," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
How did the injury occur?
Pandya, who has been based in Bengaluru since the end of the IPL and trains at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, had been working towards a fitness certification ahead of his planned return to competitive cricket. During fielding drills just before the Afghanistan T20 series, he developed shooting pain around his knee. That pain resurfaced as he was preparing to complete his fitness assessment, ultimately leading to the scan that confirmed the right shin injury.
Selectors had set his Return To Play date as September 20, 2026, and had included him in the India A One Day series against Australia A, which was due to begin on October 6, 2026. The BCCI operations team had also taken his passport for visa processing, as the board wanted him to travel to Japan for the Asian Games 2026. The fresh shin injury has now disrupted both those plans entirely.
This is the third fresh niggle Pandya has suffered in the last four months. He had previously missed the Afghanistan ODIs and the England T20Is due to separate injury concerns, raising continued questions about his ability to sustain fitness across a prolonged period.
What are Pandya's next possible return windows?
The two-week rest period is the immediate requirement, after which a structured rehabilitation timeline will be set based on that assessment. Until that review is complete, no firm return date can be established.
Possible return windows for Pandya, subject to his fitness, include the Zimbabwe ODIs, the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. None of these opportunities are confirmed at this stage, and the BCCI and selectors will monitor his progress closely before making any further selection decisions.
