The New York Giants were able to pick up a key road win in JJ McCarthy's first start with the team. The former Minnesota Viking was razor sharp as the Giants earned a 27-21 triumph over the Houston Texans in overtime.
Devin Singletary scored the winning touchdown in the extra session. He ran 30 yards through the Texans defense to deliver the win. Singletary's run came one play after Cam Skattebo exploded 42 yards on a well-blocked run up the middle for the Giants.
New York head coach John Harbaugh credited McCarthy for the consistent job he did under center. He completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards. He did not throw any touchdown passes but he also did not throw any interceptions.
McCarthy was acquired by the Giants in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings for a fifth-round draft choice. Harbaugh was fully appreciative of the journey that McCarthy has been on in his career.
“He was a national champion with Michigan and a high draft choice of the Minnesota Vikings,” Harbaugh said in his postgame media session. “JJ suffered an injury but that team kept him and traded a veteran quarterback. He lost his job and he was ridiculed. Then he was traded and it's a new beginning.
“That's why football is like life. You get knocked down and you get a chance to comeback. That's what he is doing.”
The Giants improved their record to 4-2-1 with the victory and they are in first place in the NFC East. The Giants have a bye in Week 8 before returning to action in Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
